If you are in the fortunate position to be in the process of adopting or have just recently adopted (within the last 6 months) I highly recommend learning early intervention techniques. It is a combination of adoption parenting and activities to develop attachment and heal trauma. It is time well spent to avoid potential frustration down the road.
I know that you will hear many well meaning professionals and friends say ‘wait and see’ if you need help. Unfortunately, research has shown that early loss, neglect (even benign neglect like in an orphanage), and abuse keep the child in a state of high levels of stress chemicals which affect the development of the higher function part of the brain. This is the part of the brain that kids need for school and good behavior. You can see why it’s important to start as soon as possible; don’t wait!
In fact, it is so important that I offer a discount to those who begin Early Intervention work up to 6 months into the adoption. I hope you take advantage of this opportunity.
For an example of an early intervention please read the article ‘Creating a Family Identity’ reviewing a class I created and presented to parents.
I would love to help you get started now on creating your wonderful adoptive family!Feel free to contact me for a free 30 minute phone consult at 408/891-7904 or junemikkelsen@gmail.com
