Thinking about Adopting?

I remember exploring the idea of adoption with my husband. It was an exciting idea and also scary. There are so many decisions to make.

  • Should you go with independent adoption, foster-adoption or international adoption?
  • What age should you adopt?
  • Should you adopt a boy or girl?
  • What ethnicity would be a good fit for your family?
  • Would you be willing to adopt a special needs child?

These questions are the first to be thought about. But there are important questions and decisions that go far beyond these early decisions that can make or break an adoptive family.

  • What is your potential child’s history?
  • What is your own childhood and attachment history?
  • What are the beliefs you and your spouse have about discipline?
  • Are you introverts or extroverts? Which temperament is your potential child?
  • Do you have the resources (physical, emotional, financial) in case more support is needed than you originally thought?
  • What are the potential problems that could arise?

Exploring these questions upfront can help you decide whether adoption is right for you!
